A number of security measures are used by casinos to keep their patrons safe. Some of these include surveillance cameras, which watch every table and change windows and doorways to focus on suspicious behavior. Elaborate surveillance systems also allow security personnel to monitor the entire casino at once and record video feeds.
Superstitions
Casino owners have long tried to overcome the dangers of superstition, which may make some players irrational. For example, a Las Vegas strip casino owner once spent an evening spreading salt around the casino to ward off the evil spirits that could hurt his gambling business.
Increased employment
Some proponents of casinos point to a lower local unemployment rate after the casino has opened as evidence that the casino is improving the economy. This may be true, but the decline in the unemployment rate may also be a result of a migration of skilled labor from outside the area to the casino.
The unemployment rate in the local area might not be declining, however, because most casino jobs require some level of skill. For example, a casino might hire accountants, dealers or security staff from outside the area, who commute to the casino and reduce local unemployment.
