Definitions of Slots

What is a slot? A slot is a transitive verb and is a common noun that refers to an opening or a place to operate an aircraft. Slots are a great tool for controlling air traffic at airports and prevent repeated delays caused by multiple flights. It is also commonly used in the sense of a job. Here are some definitions of slots:

The high slot is one of the most common places for defensemen to take shots. These defenders can often rip blistering slap shots into the net. Other times, a winger or center will put their stick out in front of the goalie, redirecting the shot into the net. Players taking slap shots often reach speeds of 100 mph or more, requiring goaltenders to react in a split second. One of the best shots in hockey is a well-placed one-timer from the high slot.

Slot receivers line up on the right or left side of the field. In some situations, the slot receivers are mixed between the inside and outside sides of the field. Multiple slot receivers are referred to as Inside and Outside Slot. In addition to catching the football, a slot receiver can also take a handoff. When the slot receiver is covered by the defensive back, the slot corner will typically cover them, and is often smaller and quick.
