A slot is a grammatical term for a hollow that forms at the base of the throat, above the breastbone. The term “slot” comes from Old French, and its origin is unclear. Old Norse slod is another synonym for the word. It was first recorded as a verb in the 1520s. Slots are also used to refer to an opening in an interior copy desk; for example, the chief copy editor of a newspaper occupies a slot at his desk. Slot machines were invented in 1888, and the term “slot” became more widely used than the word “slot”.
Bill Totts was a true denizen of the South of the Slot. He was class conscious like the average workman, but held greater hatred for the “scabs” than the average union man. He was the first to cross the Slot, and later became a popular mascot of the Parapsychic Center. While playing slots was a sinful activity, he was able to make money and support his family. After years of hard work, he had earned the title of “slot master.”
A shot from the high slot is a powerful one. Many players can execute blistering slap shots into the net. While a winger or center can direct a shot from the high slot, a goalie must react fast to prevent the puck from bouncing into the net. A well-placed wrist shot from the high slot is considered one of the greatest shots in hockey. This type of shot represents an opportunity for a player to score without deflection.
