Internet gambling started growing in popularity in the 1990s. Initially, online gambling seemed to be an end-run around government control, allowing operators to set up shop in offshore jurisdictions and offer services to anyone with a computer and a credit card. Despite the many benefits of online gambling, not all states have legalized online gambling. Some states are resistant to gambling, due to their religious beliefs, and others simply lack the funds to regulate the industry. For example, while gambling is legal in 48 states, it is illegal in Hawaii and Utah, which both have large Mormon populations and have a history of limiting the activity. In Hawaii, gambling is not allowed for fear of spoiling the family atmosphere and bringing undesirable visitors.
Online gambling is played by placing bets on the outcome of a game. While there is no set formula for defining online gambling, the definition of the activity remains largely the same – betting money in the hope of earning a reward. Besides traditional casino games, poker and daily fantasy sports have become very popular and are a form of gambling that requires skill and chance. Online gambling has become so popular that it has spawned numerous websites, each with their own unique rules and strategies.
